a few items from the op manual from Gehl.
Put them in a line -end to end- pressed together. Every so often leave a space. the next row to be spaced so sunlight can get down between. Make sure good drainage. North to south if possible so sunlight can get to cylindrical part as it passes east to west. If heavy rain area put shingled part towards rain. Shingle is the smooth feel as you run your hand around the cylindrical part. so I would have them with ends facing downhill. Plenty of air to stop spontaneous combustion if hay is damp [on hot days].
