George, it could be a bunch of different things. Check the easier stuff first:

Point gap could be getting too small.
Plugs could be fouled.
Enough gas might not be making it to the carb.
Float valve in the carb might be dirty.
Compression problems - sticky valve or worse.

When you start looking, take out one spark plug, see if it is all gummed up. If so, clean, regap and reinstall all four. If not, crank the engine with one plug out, wire still attached and base of the plug (threads) touching a good ground contact. It helps to have an assistant with this. See if the spark is a distinct snap and bluish, or if it is closer to yellow without a snap. If all the electrical system is working, you should see a bright blue spark.

Then look for enough gas. Steady flow into the sediment bowl first. Steady flow out the drain under the carb next. Check float level in the carb if nothing looks broken so far.

You will need a compression tester next, and a pro if the compression is bad in one or more cylinders (readings should be all about the same).
