1950's Farmall Cub Smokey Exhaust

Can anyone help? Exhaust smoke is black then turns lighter when reved. Tractor has new rings and valve job. Carb is okay. Timing is on. Tractor starts and runs good until the plugs foul out, which doesn't take too long. Has a magneto distributor, could the coil be weak? What could be wrong, I'm confused. Tractor has positive ground six volt battery that was hooked up backwards when I purchased it, could something have happened electrically? Thank you.
