"Idealy", a Voltage Regulator's internal Cutout Relay should be rated to handle the generators output current capacity. (i.e. if the gennys a 40 amp the VR should be also) Its typical for the charging curent into the battery via the cutout relay to be high (maybe 30 amps and more depends on the genny) for a short time immediately following a start up, but shortly thereafter it can drop to a low amps maintenance rate such as 5 to 10 amps or so. Its more critical as to how many amps it can switch then how many amps are flowing in a more steady state (relays not opening n closing a lot) condition..
If the genny is pumping out 38 amps Id want a VR rated to handle 40 amps, but if its only say 30 it could still last a longggggggg time.
