You were fed a line of BS. Yes, you need and overrunning clutch. The 8 N will handle a 5 ft heavy duty rotary cutter (bushhog) without any problem. I have had such an arrangement since 1965 without problem and I live in hilly country. For many years this was all that I had and I have mowed hundreds of acres with the equipment over the years. I still use it for small task.
