The transmissions are all the same.
The TA is in front of the speed transmission. It adds a second constant mesh gear set to drive the counter shaft giving you two different speeds for each gear in the speed transmission.
You can get TA delete kits which eliminate the TA but if yours still works on the high side (lever ahead) you will gain very little for your time and money by installing one.
If you have hydraulic problems that are causing the TA problems it is important to get them repaired. The same hydraulic system that provides fluid to the steering, brakes, and TA also use excess fluid to lube the differential. If you are lacking pressure for the steering system you are almost always starving the differential lube system.
