Popping going down a hill is just normal.. If the muffler is not a good fit, it will pop a lot more.. At idle, it could be from a worn bearing in the distributor..worn valve guides, or bad valves.. Have you checked compression, or checked valve lash..? I definitely like the original "Nelson" muffler the Best..it has that "Sweet Sound" of a WD....!!! Nothing else sounds like one..
