I agree that wind and solar should not be looked to be the number 1 power source for the future.
I have installed both types of systems, and both will provide a constant power source. They both utilize storage of electricity, via batteries, so even if the sun isn't shining, and even if the blades aren't turning there is still an electrical supply.
This is a good solution for single residences, and while costs are high for installation, in my area the average electric bill will run $300-$400/month. Consider that $3600-$4800 dollars a year going toward the purchase and installation of a self sufficient system and eliminating the power company, it make much more sense. 3-4 year payout, it's not a bad deal.
However, I think we would be fooling only ourselves to suppose that we could supply the nations power requirements via either source as a stand alone power supply.
