I don't know from personal experience,but we thought we couldn't hook a box to our small one in the bedroom because it didn't have the 3 wire hookup,so we bought a new TV. Gave the converter that we got with the coupon to our son. Told him it wouldn't hook to ours. He pulled everything out of the box and said "what's this then?". It had a single wire hookup too that just plugged in to the antenna jack. If that's the case,I'd think you'd just need a splitter from Radio Shack to hookup the box and the Direct TV.
