I'm not familiar with that tractor, so I can't answer you directly. However, in situations like this, I guess I weigh the benifits vs the damages. If all the parts are already damaged, you might not hurt anything. However, if the shaft is still good, maybe you will end up ruining that too yet. Or the like.

The calendar makes a difference for me as well. In August I tend to try to limp along until the end of the season. In May I tend to feel the season is just begining and I might as well get things fixed right instead of worrying about it all summer.

Have you looked at it closely? Maybe all is well, with the broken pin the splines may have just slipped out of place.
