Your two circuits are electrically identical. It doesn't really matter if the wiring runs: Switch -- Resistor -- Coil -- Points or: Switch -- Coil -- Resistor -- Points In either case, the total impedance of the circuit will be the same (as will the current through the circuit). Most people put the resistor between the switch and the coil because it's an easy place to put it.
