When I was about sixteen the local garbage contractor was the worst low bidder ever.He used the local kids for labor and his truck broke down daily. That was when you could soak the whole road with hydraulic oil and nobody cared. If your mom said he was looking for you your heart would sink because it was the hardest work. The neck muscles support the big green barrel. There is a way to lift too heavy barrels from the foot to side of knee to hip then thrust up onto the shoulder.Hard work. Some houses you could hardly lift it.When dumping into the truck brake drums and auto parts would come out.The only guys that liked this job were boxers who would train as they collected the garbage. One driver even had a fake hand that would fall off on the way to the dump. Then he d say hey kid reach down and get my hand and unscrew that stud with a dime.OK.This was a hard days work.Worst was when the truck broke the day before and the route was doubled up for two days worth.Years later all the Italian names were gone and it is all Waste Management owned. The drivers and pick up guys are all Teamsters. This is probably one of the hardest, dangerous jobs.Hope they pay them a fortune.
