Perhaps depends upon the area. Most of the garbage truck haulers around here are not educated, nor do they need to be beyond just getting their CDL. It's hard physical work and it's moving trash that could potentially have all kinds of hazardous waste in it. Not to mention the high likelyhood of getting hit while doing roadside pick ups. Exposed to the weather, so on days when the weather is nasty it is anything but pleasent.
It's a job that I wouldn't want. Dealing with other peoples dirty stinky stuff for a living. Hot in the summer and cold in the winter. One of those jobs that ranks right up there with cleaning out portable toilets.
