Row crop tractors, as in 2WD with adjustable wide front axles, are still available today. It's more common to see a new tractor with front wheel assist now. FWA tractors are capable of row crop work. I know somebody who uses a CaseIH 5120 with FWA to put in raised beds and plastic mulch. He was able to adjust the wheel spacing w/o much trouble. I saw an IH 686 that was built new in 1979 with a narrow front. Probably the last available with that option. Deere offered narrow fronts on the 4030 and 4230 until 1974. MF had it available on the 165 row crop (maybe others) until around then, and Case offered it on the 770 and 870 until around that time. Why was the narrow front dropped? Several reasons. Tractors were getting too big for NFEs to support (you can only get so big of a tire under the frame). Farmers didn't cultivate row crops as much because of increased herbicide use, so front mount cultivator sales plummeted. Mounted corn picker sales died as combines with high corn harvesting capacity came along.
