We had a similar ice storm in 76. We went without power for 8 days. The first night we used a gas trash pump to pump our sump every 1/2 hour. When you went outside to start up, it was like rifle shots as the trees snapped off in the distance. Back then not a lot of homeowners had generators and there weren't any Lowes or Home Depots. Some neighborhoods had power. I remember our entrance wire was about 2 inches in diameter with ice build up. We found out that some of the country folk went out during the night and fired their shotguns into the air near the trees and the resulting shock dropped the ice off, so they didn't break.
