Years ago, when we still had hogs in the area, a local guy fed discarded products from the Gilster plant. They made cake mixes, flour, and puddings, and I suppose sometimes something went wrong with the recipe and the mix was not up to spec. He said the worst smell was from hogs fed on Tapioca pudding. It was like nothing I'd ever smelt before. . .
Couple years ago, I sniffed a discarded gasoline jug (what a fool!) that the neighbor found in my woods. It had been used in a meth making operation. Whatever was in that jug ruined my sense of smell. I miss smelling hot biscuits and stuff like that, but I must admit, sometimes it's a blessing to have no working smeller.
By the way - please remember - NEVER sniff a found jug containing an unknown liquid. It was like breathing fire, and within about a minute I couldn't feel my hands or feet. My heart felt like it was running a hundred miles an hour. I guess it drives the oxygen from your lungs?? I called the sheriff and they predicted I'd die before help could arrive. Obviously I didn't die, I must have gotten too small a dose to be fatal. I felt like a fool - they had passed out info at work warning us not to do just what I had done. If you see duct tape around a nozzle on a gas jug, or around a hose in a 2 litre soda jug, DON"T SNIFF THE CONTENTS! It could be fatal.

To the newcomer planning to restore the machine, this means you have everything you need for the moment (something to sit in the shop and just look at for awhile while you read the books). To the newcomer that wants to get out and use the machine for field work, you may have already hit a major roadblock. That is the dreaded "proprietary hitch". With the exception of the
