In response, who said I was against a flat tax? That's not a bad idea.
I would say why exempt people who make less than $20,000? If we're going to have a flat tax, then tax everyone. People making only a little would then pay only a little.
How about this? I was in Norway a few years ago for work (they sent me to train the Norwiegian division - so no, I don't make less than $20,000) and their system is something like a 20% sales tax on everything. Have to have that big-a$$ flat screen TV? Well, you'll pay 20% tax on it. Got to have a luxury car? Same thing. I don't know about exemptions like business purchases (tractors?).
Point is, taxing consumption may be another way to go. If you can get by with less, you will pay less. But I like the flat tax idea, too.
