My F-up wasn't as bad as yours, but I still regret it 35 years later. I was running the combine, and as I pulled up to the truck to unload I was mortified to see that I had forgotten to shut off the auger after the last load. The Massey 510s had a pivoting auger that would run after you swung it back to its stowed position.
Our hired man who was driving the truck saw what happened, but he didn't tell my dad. He saw how upset I was, and he also knew my dad would be a helluva lot more upset than I was! As it turned out, I had the job the next year of tilling that field, so no one else saw that bright green strip of volunteer wheat down the field and back, the evidence of my crime.
Dad has been in the ground for over twenty years. As far as I know, he never found out.
