Alan, about the only mag & distributor that my J.D. manuals don't have details on is that "XB" battery ignition distributor. First make sure you are getting 6 volts to the ignition coil (while cranking also). Then put in a new set of points & condencer (or REMOVE & clean the contacts on the old ones) if they are burnt or oxidized they won't work correctly. Then clean all the wire attachment areas that go to the points & coil. Make sure you are not using "TVRS" auto type ignition wires, these old low power ignitions need copper or steel core plug wires to work correctly. Check the cap for carbon traces & cracks. You can also check the coil primary & secondary for an open or an internal short to ground. But without specific resistances you won't be able to tell much else.
