We had a two-party line when we built our house in 1973. Wife was nursing director at the hospital and on-call a lot, so we got one of the first private lines around here, cost about $2 a month extra. As a kid I remember our number was 1061X, and we could call anyone in our exchange by just dialing the last four digits of the number.
