Before you get a coil, try a new condenser. About an hour ago I cured just this same problem with my Oliver 88 by replacing the condenser. The two gas tractors I use the most are the Oliver and the 630 JD and I've been replacing condensers on both of them twice as often as the points. They start crapping out, smoking and popping in the muffler.
The coil could still be the problem, but the condenser is cheap and easy. It doesn't seem like condensers last very long any more. Jim
