I have an f-250 with a 460 and I have an 01 f-250 with a 7.3 diesel. I get about 8mpg drivin around town with the 460 and I dont have a very heavy foot. I get 10mpg with my diesel pullin my gooseneck with my 4020 on it and get 18 just drivin around town. You are correct that it is a very tough engine and that it really likes the gas. The diesel will last longer and hold up better in my opinion and if I was only pullin a trailer occasionally and was gonna drive the truck reguarly I would have say go with the diesel.
