Neither JFK nor the JCS realized that Cuba already had tactical nuclear weapons on the ground and ready to use on any invading force that landed on Cuban shores. So JFK's [public] reliance on the blockade more than likely ACCIDENTALLY prevented US troops from encountering nuclear weapons, requiring US retaliation against both the USSR and Cuba, and most likely beginning WW III.
Scary, but apparently true. Had JFK yielded to LeMay and his cohorts, there may have been extensive damage to the US, and while the US probably would have won the war...the question remains: at what cost?
