The problem with the 42 and the 40 is that they were not too popular compared with the other JD machines, and therefore parts today are hard to come by, new or used. If you don't need a corn head, an IH 82 (last produced in 1974, and very popular, at least around here) would be an easier machine to get parts for should you need them. However, if you're up to the challenge of creating your own parts, then you won't have a problem with the 42.
