My parents had one behind their house a few years ago. As I understand it they are relatively uncommon this far north.
They are a very curious bird. We were siting on my parents front porch watching the woodpecker watch us from a tree that was about 50 yards away. It then started flying straight toward us, but would pull up at the last moment to fly over the house and circle back to land in the tree again. On it's last trip it actually flew onto the porch. It was close enough to feel the breeze off it's wings. If I hadn't been there to see it, I don't think I would have believed the story. All we can figure is that it was a relatively young bird that was very curious about people.
