Chris - Regarding power loss, check for a plugged vent in the gas cap (try loosening the cap). Also look for a dirty screen in both the sediment bowl and at the cab (screen's behind the carb inlet nut). And since your tractor is 12 volt, is there a ballast resistor installed in the coil primary, or has the original 6 volt coil replaced with a 12 volt coil? A 6 volt coil can overheat on 12 volts, dropping it's output and causing power problems after it's run a while. I had a similar problem with the alternator not "turning on" on my SM. Replacing the pulley on the alternator with a smaller diameter pulley (about 1-3/4") solved the problem.
