I have a Wilesco "Atomic" steam engine that is about 40 years old, as well as a Mamod steamroller of the same era, both given to me by my late Uncle when I was a kid.
Both still work. my older boys weren't much interested in them (they DO like the REAL ones at shows, though). I have to drag them out of storage and show them to the nine year old (perhaps this weekend).
