I bought a JD "M" and when I looked at it 8 months earlier the engine was free but when I brought it home it was stuck and stuck bad. My advice is to tear it down before you bend or break something.
I've heard of guys using rifle bore cleaner and let it soak over night. It can usually be found at an army surplus store. I've seen it work. It does wonders.
