I think the Amish are doing something right.
We all "pine" for the good 'ole days, but when a group of people are actually DOING it like the good old days, we call 'em crazy!
I farm with tractors, but I have two Belgians that I give wagon rides with. I tried the horse-farmer thing, but it didn't work for me...
...but I think I've figured that out: To be a horse farmer, like the Amish, you have to be TOTALLY committed to the lifestyle. I still had my job "in town", and I just don't think you can do horse farming "halfways" like that.
I've known several Amish and read a couple of books about them; they're really fascinating. Have you ever made a deal with one of those guys? He'll pull out a roll of cash that would make any big-city "pimp" cry. They have a community fund for medical bills, so they're self-insured. They work like hell, they take care of their elders, they worship God.
Maybe they look at us like we're the strange ones!
