The H3 is a derivative of the Trailblazer/Colorado platform, so it has most of the qualities and faults of those vehicles. For best performance in the snow, look for one with the locking rear differential option; it makes a big difference even with 4WD.
Right now, leases through GMAC are ridiculous, but some of the other lenders are starting to lease. Credit unions are your best bet. If you can buy extra miles in advance for cheap, then a lease would be OK, otherwise purchase outright. You just need to run the numbers both ways with your lenders. For many years leases on SUVs were cheap because the residual values were so high. But GMAC got burned when gas prices went over four bucks a gallon and you couldn't give away a used SUV.
Speaking of used SUVs, I suggest you check the dealers for two year old lease turn-ins. They may be able to make you a deal. Buying through a dealer, you may be able to purchase an extended warranty; I think GM introduced the 100,000 mile powertrain warranty in 2007.
