Well, you're probably right, they can search anywhere, anytime. They just can't use any of the evidence found, and are subject to civil liability for the ILLEGAL search. there's plenty of case evidence to back this one up. Nobody can just search your house just because they suspect something and anyone who says they can is wrong. If the police saw you trying to destroy some evidence, through the window, they may then go in to protect that evidence; this is one of a very few limited exceptions.
