I've been told by more than one person never to hook nylon straps and chains together on the same tow/pull disaster will always strike.
A farmer at our local tractor show was stuck with his big truck and trailer. He would not let others use a strap to pull him out because his friend was killed by using a strap and a chain. He blamed the strap. Many others tried to tell him that is why your friend's accident turned into a fatality because he used a strap hooked to a chain.
No one had a chain long enough to pull this farmer out of the mud but many had straps but could not convince him to let them use one. He finally convinced someone with a big tractor to pull him out, took some doing but they got it.
