I had an AC D-14 freeze completely, because the dealer rebuilt it but was too cheap to put in ANY antifreeze. I went to start it on the coldest day I can remember. It fired right up, I started smelling the burning belt, shut it down immediately, looked it over to see what if anything was froze and busted. Turned out that the thermostat housing(aluminum) and 3 freeze plugs on the head were all that blew (grand total of $13.75) I thawed the rest of the water out by putting a perfection (wick type) kerosene heater under it(the tractor, that is), and ended up with about 4 barn cats on top of it!
