I did something similar on my Mekur. $300 retail heater blower motor. You were supposed to discharge the AC remove the AC unit and heater core under the dash just to replace the fan. You could see the blower motor through an access panel in the cowl but couldn't remove the motor through that hole. I cut the hole larger and replaced it that way. It was ugly but the car was old enough with few enough years left that I didn't care.
