If it is a live person on the other end, I used to say, "wait until you hear the sound of the click" (then hang up) but that just freed them up to bother someone else. I now tell them that I need to go find my credit card. They hang on for 5 minutes or so before they give up.
I also stuff all the junk back into the payment envelopes that comes with the phone bill, etc.
If it is a slow day, I collect scraps of paper from around the house and stuff it into any Business Reply mail envelopes that I recieved that day.
I am slowly filling their land fills instead of mine. Also, think of the time it wastes since they have to sort through the junk to see if something valuable is in the envelope.
