I think I know what you're saying. The most comfortable way to get trees and stumps out is to watch somebody take a D6 or somesuch and blade them out. If they have any problem, the operator can put the blade down, cut some roots and then shove out what's left of the stump.

For those occasions when for whatever reason a lesser, rubber tired machine is used, it's been my experience that it can be done if you're careful and, this is important, if you're also willing to get your butt off the tractor and keep cutting roots with an axe. It's a lot of work, but it'll keep you alive. Also, it's necessary to pull or nudge with the tractor something short of all all-out effort, because as others have noted, that could very well be the last thing you do.

All that assumes that the stump is on a level, smooth, firm piece of ground, and not on a sidehill or in a bunch of rocks. In situations like that dynamite or only an axe and a shovel would be appropriate.
