Most humans are "survivalists", deep within. However, economic times have been too good, too long for the fringe thinkers to get to know themselves. It is very easy to think noble thoughts when one does not have to worry about how to get food and stay warm in the winter. I suspect even the head idiot at PETA would find some logical reason to harvest Bambi if he/she were faced with starvation.
When I was nine years old,(many years ago), I never argued the necessity of carrying coal scuttles and water buckets - the need was obvious. However, if I had been given the opportunity to think about those tasks from a warm home with modern conviences, I could have made a good argument against those tasks from an environmental viewpoint.
I suspect the tougher economic times ahead, with job scarceness and lack of spending money, will cure some of our "free thinkers" from pondering the draining of the swamp when they are up to their a$$ in alligators.
