Most replies are sensible.
Always dead weight, ie. vertical lift (although they are not designed or tested for this type of operation!!). Never rolling weight. Rolling resistance will be different on diffrent surfaces.
Note though, the rated pull will only be on the first turn on the winch drum. Double the diameter with extra winds on the drum and the pull will be halved. A lot are often much worse than this.
Advice. Big is better. The hydraulic winches are definitely better but much more expensive. Simple. You pays your money and if you are lucky you get what you pay for.
Snatch blocks are for doubling your line pull, or for changing direction of pull (with no change in line pull). Less the small amount of exrta friction involved, of course.
There is a difference between continuous rating and 'maximum operating time use' say 20%. Read the small print. Like small welders might stike a rod but will soon cut out or burn out!!
The slope (length) of your ramps will make a difference to the ability to pull any load onto the tralier, as will the design of those ramps
