International law does not allow merchant ships to defend themselves with anything but firehoses. Any military action that was not a result of a direct attack or credible threat to the military vessel would result in an international outcry and possible prosecution of the officers involved, depending on which Nation they serve.If it were US ships involved it would probably be OBammy leading the crucifiction of US servicemen. These are Somali Pirates operating in the Indian Ocean, this has been a problem for years,I have ridden a heavy lift transport ship taking a drilling rig to the middle east through these waters and there are approximately 3 alerts per week of ships being attacked or captured in this area.
