I always assumed the lye that would be added to the water (or washing soda) is what will break down into the necessary electrolyte. I just havent worked out the chemistry enough at this point to figure out if the extra calcium ions in the water would end up coming out of solution on my parts or on the electrode.
If its the electrode, thats not as big a deal since I can take it out, scrape it, and then put it back in and there wont be more calcium in the water. If it ends up plating out on my parts, well thats sorta the opposite of what I am shooting for....
