Explanation noted and accepted. (Probably a language usage difference, but obsessed is a VERY negative word over here.)

The love (obsession) for firearms in the rural area of the US goes back to the days when they truly were considered a basic tool for providing food and protection. You have to remember that ours is a very young country by world standards and our very existence was dependent on the willingness of the regular citizen to be willing to use firearms and use them well.

The protection factor has now become more of an individual's family rather than the country. The rural areas have, in recent years, seen a dramatic escalation of the manufacture and usage of Meth. If you have never seen an individual under the influence of this drug, you are awaiting a major education. I have - and I decided then that a large caliber gun was not just a luxury.

I will admit that more than one or two guns is usually more of a hobby than a necessity - and that hobby does contain a increased danger with it. But life is full of danger brought on by the activities we choose to engage in. Fast cars, fast women, alcohol, smoking, etc. The list goes on and on, but part of freedom is making my own choices of danger and the level of risk. Otherwise, we all end up in a padded room with the door locked for our own good.

My 14 yr old granddaughter made an astute observation about the school rules. She noted that practically all of the most restrictive rules were written to try and control about five percent of the worst individuals. She says that the administration just doesn't have the courage to crack down on that five percent, thus the 95 percent have to tolerate a prison control mentality due to that lack of courage. I maintain that our society is headed in that same direction.

I guess in the end, you and I will just have to agree to disagree on our opinions - in a free society, that is not a bad thing.
