The good news is, the common stock can't go much lower; the bad news is, it won't get much higher, either, because any growth in value in the company will be sucked up in the guvment's preferred stock (if they do the bailout) or the "new" creditor's loans (if govt. doesn't bailout, the companies will go into Chapter 11, and you can bet they'll end up with a bunch of that AIG and bank bailout money, as any "new" loans to restructure get a super-priority collateral position).
