I though that we went off the gold standard back in 1911 (or whenever it was) when the Federal Reserve was created. I remember as a kid back in the 50's when private individuals couldn't buy gold ingots. They were only owned by the government and the standard price that was set for gold was $35.00 an ounce.
I also remember that dollar bills used to have the statement "Silver Certificate" stamped on them, then all bills changed to "Federal Reserve Note".
Who knows how the financial mess is going to work out. They haven't asked for my opinion yet.
