Not true about the s-word. There was a lengthy discussion about this fable a few weeks back, but the entire thread was deleted. That fact of the matter is that the origins of several of the most vulgar words in the English language are Anglo-Saxon, and there are very similar words in other Germanic languages. They became vulgar after the conquest of England by the Normans in 1066; the Norman (French) equivalents became acceptable and the Saxon words became vulgar.
As for the "brass monkey" story, I don't know about that one but it's true that dozens, maybe hundreds of English idioms have their origins in the British Navy. "scuttlebutt", and "slush fund" and "to the bitter end" were all expressions used in the Navy.
