If you definitely have an 8N (4-speed tranny, draft + position control on hydraulics, small diameter wheel bolt pattern), then your original engine was likely replaced with an earlier one. Engine block serial numbers for 8Ns begin with 8; numbers for 9N/2Ns begin with 9. The numbers on the various castings tell when that particular part was made, and are a clue, but not definitive. Lots of interchangeable parts between N models; who knows how long a casting might have sat around before being assembled. The N-board archives has some good info on interpreting the casting numbers. Have also included a link to Jim Smith's ID page, which details when improvements were incorporated. This might help you narrow it down some.
