I use one strand of 12 gauge hi tensile smooth wire and I have a small solar charger on a half mile to protect my wheel line and split a 40. Animals can either bull their way under between charges or jump over if the fence is too low and is only a sinle strand.
If I want to really keep them out I go to three strands of smooth wire at 42, 30, and 18 inches above the ground. Same charger and it puts out ~6KV on the fence.
