I'm one of those stepsons. Mom remarried after my father died when I was very young. Dad and I had a "tolerated" relationship for about the first 14 years (Dad's father and family considered me a b**tard stepchild) until the time I got real tired of getting slapped up side the head and kicked in the a**. Dad had a tough time getting back up after that little fiasco and I told him I didn't care how his abusive father treated him, I wasn't going to deal with that crap anymore. After that spat Dad and I were best of friends for the next 27 years. Do the best you can with the young fellow, make it clear to him that he can fix anything and you will show him how. Don't do it for him. Even if he 'just don't get it', he'll think a lot of you for taking the time to try.
