All I know is the water was leaking from the bottom of the tank. I did not remove anything to diagnose further. My guess is either the tank itself or the supply pipe. It was NOT leaking boiler water. The good new is it may be under warranty. The bad news is the replacement cost $1400 and change by the time you add tax, 3 copper unions, 2 ball valves and other incindental plumbing parts. The pipes never line up do they.
IF I had to do it again I think I would look at tankless electric instant hot type water heaters. $1400 every 10 years along with the cost of oil although effecient may cost more over the life of the product than 2 tankless water heaters running on electricity. If only I had 2 (or 4 if 220V) open spots in my service panel.
