Oh...impeller in lower unit is critical...it's the only thing stopping the motor from overheating..it's condition should be checked and maybe it should be replaced. Now, you're getting beyond my capability to explain how to do it without knowing the make and year of the motor. The impeller is rubber and runs in a housing and is a service item. It self destructs with time and will no longer pump cooling water.
