This is a common problem, there have been posts in the past about it and hopefully is no big deal, although it usually gets stuck in reverse. Before you remove the cover, look in thru the oil filler and maybe you can use something like a bent screwdriver or such to pop the shift lever back in place. If not, then you only have to raise the cover an inch or two and then you can relocate the lever; the problem is you will probably damage the cover gasket so try the oil filler first. In the future just be careful shifting from left side to the right side and vice versa; shift slowly and never pull up on the lever when shifting. It is worn but will work ok if you are careful.
